Good point. I was glad to be traveling with the D3 and it's high iso 
performance, but with slower lenses, focusing could be problematic.

Hi David,

If you do decide to purchase the 70-300 I'd suggest getting it in time to
test in similar conditions to what you expect on your trip. Here I'm
thinking light levels and subject matter. I found the focusing on my 70-300
and E-420 combination to be close to unusable in early morning and late
evening light when shooting low contrast subjects such as animal fur.
