Sorry Moose,

I believe that focusing is 100% electronically, but zooming is mechanical.
Even works when lens is disconnected from the body. What's wrong with the
lens? No idea!

I can't believe that is any mechanical function. Everything is electrical.
There are a couple of other brands that
accommodate their old MF lenses with mechanical connections.

First thing to do is clean the contacts on lens and body.

Perfect situation for a tiny bit of condensation to mess up a contact that
was already a little dirty.

The Tamron lenses on my Canons very occasionally cease to AF properly,
busily and noisily hunting back and forth. Sounds
like something terrible has happened. If it hasn't happened for months, it
often takes me a moment to remember what it
is. A quick wipe of contacts with my shirt or other piece of cloth puts
things right. Then I try to remember to do a
better job when back out of the field.
