Which medium?

A few years ago, I visited two galleries next to each other. One was proud to
display and sell only wet printed images
from film. The other showed and sold prints without discrimination as to the
source and method of printing.

Both had a mix of types and quality of prints, at least in my opinion, covering
the a range from a very few outstanding
prints, through many nice through OK ones, to a few I wouldn't give house room.

If the medium is the final print - or the web image - I don't think the means
of reproducing some version of the
original subject is of much relevance. I know there are those who may be able
to tell the difference between film and
digital capture, wet or inkjet print, between Tri-X and HP5*

Still, I'm betting that if I went back in time and showed a print of B&W
version of my recent sink image without NR, I
could get a bunch of photographers arguing over which film it was from the look
of the grain.

But I digress. My question is whether such subtle, and mistakable, differences
in the final image seen by the viewer
make the medium which is the message any different, or at least different in a
significant way.
