Those photos are a perfect example of how skilled earlier photographers were 
in the use of light. I would bet that most of them used hot lights, but 
large flashbulbs, those ones about the size of a 100 watt bulb, could have 
done them well. Note how the backgrounds in the factory scenes went black, 
removing many distractions. These guys kicked ass!

A friend sent me this link this morning.  I found it very interesting
with some great photos.  Kodachrome sheet film at this time was only ASA
8 (daylight) or 10 (type A, movie lights) which probably explains the
use of much supplementary light which I assume is flash but might be
incandescent movie lights.
