How it works, Piers you old carmudgeon, how it works. :-) 

The word has been in use for a couple of decades at least.  On the Eurofighter 
programme we used to describe the group of functions provided by individual 
systems in the cockpit.

I remember my grandfather reading a copy of the RAF News at about the same time 
(early 90s) and asking me what collocated meant . . .
