McDermitt isn't what you'd call a "town". There are only a few buildings
including the worst motel I've even stayed in in the US. (it was late,
it was snowing, too far to Burns) McDermitt's main reason for existence
is the liberal gambling and prostitution laws in Nevada. There is also
an Indian Reservation and basic supplies for the widely dispersed
ranches. I suspect the speed trap was to fund the reservation. We have
one of those on WA Hwy20 on the Swinomish Res. Never had a problem in
McDermitt. Lately I hear that the drug cartels have moved into Harney
Co.to take advantage of the remote location. So-called "green power"
corporations are also staking out territory.
