Paul,

I guess I spoke too soon.  Looking back at the image linked below, I see 
that the cables are similar.  When I look at the wire from beneath the 
cable, the winding angles seem to be more in line with the cable direction. 
I suspect, in both my and your images, the focal length caused a compressed 
view.
