Yeah, I have a Slingshot 200. It's not that bad for me, but definitely puts 
unbalanced pressure on the body.

If you must have a backpack, you might look at the Lowepro Flipside series. 
With the opening on the strap side, you can 
lay them on the ground without getting the area against your body 
dirty/wet/muddy. Taking your arms out of the shoulder 
straps and swinging the pack around on the waist straps allows access to 
contents without taking all the way off. And 
they have a decent looking way to carry a tripod vertically on the middle of 
the back. I just saw one with tripod 
mounted on a trail, and the tripod holder looked pretty decent. Probably 
awkward to get at, though.

I've been thinking that I would probably have been happier with one of those 
than the Slingshot. Oh well, now I very 
seldom carry anything more than a small waist pack.

It does sound like you really need solutions beyond just camera gear.
