And I'll even fess up to using P mode once. (I've actually told this
story here before). Whilst my photo mentor was shooting the bride's
prep for the wedding I was shooting the groom and his father who were
also getting dressed for the wedding. After having done a few shots in
the house I turned around, realized all was quiet and groom and father
were nowhere to be seen. After a few milliseconds of angst I realized
that the church was about 1/4 mile down the street, looked out the door
and there the two of them were some short distance up the street heading
for the church at a brisk walking clip. I grabbed my gear bag and
started running down the street as fast as I could (that's not very
fast). I eventually caught up with them and managed a few good shots of
father and son together. But I had been totally unprepared to go from
manual flash mode inside the dim house to full blown sun. And while I
was running I couldn't think straight let alone take an exposure
measurement and set the camera. What to do???!!!

Ah, "P" mode to the rescue. Perfectly made for the clear and sunny but
not harsh late morning light with subjects not particularly close, depth
of field not critical. The type that Bryan Peterson describes as
aperture = "don't care".
