Hi Ken,

You are referring to the Bonanza with the conventional tail, I gather.  Yes, 
with the bigger engines, an/or turbocharging, they can be loud.

I assume the strakes were added for the same reason they have been added to 
many airplanes, to avoid stability problems at high angles of attack, and to 
help with spin recovery.  Seldom used, but nice to have if you ever need 
them.
