For certain types of graphical work, I wholeheartedly agree.
Of course, they could have said the same thing in 1987 when Canon  
introduced the EOS / Autofocus system :-)

I also use Blender 3D (just for fun though), and I agree that many  
types of work that is photographically produced (and lots of work that  
*can't* be photographed!), can be rendered instead.
What is not to be underestimated is the extreme skill it still  
currently requires to do so - it's really not easy building and photo- 
realistically rendering 3D models.

The reasons behind photography can probably be classified in one of  
two categories though: Content Creation, or Capturing Reality (or some  
creative interpretation thereof).
3D rendering will only make inroads into the first one, I think.
