Here in Belgium the flash of an indicator is just a habit - there's no
thought process* going on - and then the car WILL change lanes, gap or
not.
But like anything, you get used to it, do it yourself, and then it
becomes just the way traffic works.

Overtaking on the wrong side is another of those things that is
considered one of the seven deadly sins in England. Here it is almost
normal - but it does carry a penalty - at the same severity as the car
who was hogging the wrong lane and should have moved over.


* What piques me is the habitual use of indicators, even when there is
no one to signal to. I still remember learning the English way
"mirror, signal, manouver" but with an additional thought process
instilled in me by the ex-police driving instructor. He would always
ask "which drivers / pedestrians / other road user are you signalling
to?" - if none, don't signal.

Aah, that itch feels better now I've scratched it... (grammer police,
please forgive me using prepositions to end sentences with).
