Egad, how can your sub-editor have let that slip "past"? Granted, this is
not a point of grammar, but you should know by now that the list grammar
police is backed by forensic lexicographers, detective syntacticians and
consulting orthographers!

Okay, so I'm pondering the use of "since" in your response. True, time has
past since you were an English teacher, but the meaning tilts more toward
"because" you were an English teacher in your former life.
