I've never been comfortable with 3-way tripod heads for a number of
reasons, and instead I've been using an made from a flash bracket by removing
the grip clamshell, drilling additional holes, and then tapping the holes for a
1/4-20 UNC thread:

For some time I've been bemoaning the fact that there is no provision for
using a mechanical (or bulb) remote shutter release with most, if not all
digital cameras. The Olympus E-500 does not even provide for using the wired
remote, leaving you with IR remote only. Recently I was using the L-bracket
and realised that there was a relatively simple solution to the problem, and a
little machine shop work produced the following:

Adding a Mobilgrip with a shutter release cable (there are two versions)
easily allows for firm one-hand operation, freeing the other hand for holding a
diffuser or reflector:

And the combination can also be used with a heavy telephoto zoom such as
the Vivitar 75-260mm TX, almost at the centre of gravity and again freeing up
the other hand:

Sometimes the simple solutions take longer to devise.
