Ken is trying to invent a marketing term but too late for the now
defunct Minolta. Minolta never used the term "matrix" let alone "3D
matrix". I'm sure what he's talking about is what Minolta called
"multi-segment" metering. For the A1 it's described as:

"uses 300 segments to measure luminance and color. This data is
combined with distance information to calculate the camera exposure.
This advanced metering system will give accurate worry-free exposures in
almost all situations."

I see that the terminology has been carried over to Sony DSLRs with the
A900 having 40 segments. But the A900 manual makes no mention of
distance integration perhaps because many lenses don't pass distance
data. The A1 with its integrated 28-200mm equivalent lens does know
focusing distance and the sensor based exposure system can have lots
more segments. By the time we get to the NEX-7, however,
"multi-segment" has morphed into "multi-pattern" and again there is no
mention of distance.

I suspect that there's a patent application or Minolta white-paper
somewhere that describes how distance info is integrated into the
exposure calculation but I'm unaware of it.

ps: I agree that the A1's metering system is quite accurate.
