Yeah, mirror lock is a pain, At least half the times I've used it, I've
forgotten to turn it off. Then I am flummoxed
when I pres the shutter release and the viewfinder goes dark. So I tended to
use self-timer. At least if I leave it on,
and it starts beeping, I can stop it with a quick press of the Drive Button and
turn it off without going into a menu.

I think the only sensible way to use mirror lock-up on the 5D, if one uses it
with any regularity, is to set it in the
Custom user setting on the control dial.

Things are easier on the 60D, and I assume, other later menu set-ups. The 2
sec. self-timer option works quite well. It
seems to be just right for things to settle down on a tripod. Even watching the
moon through a 1000 mm lens at 10x, it's
settled down in that time. However, I do tend to use a radio remote in
combination with the 2 sec delay for anything
that sensitive.

The 60D also has a quite different menu system, which is easier to navigate.
There are many horizontal tabs, each of
which is only one screen high/deep, much quicker to look through. O of the tabs
is "My Menu", in which one may place
most desired menu items from the other tabs. Putting mirror lock there makes it
much more accessible.
