I'm revisiting the 16-bit grayscale scanning. I'll let you guys know...

The image gamma seems to really be the thing that corrects the
unhappiness I have with most people's scans. You are doing curves
adjustment, which might be simulating what the gamma adjustment is
doing. In my old copy of Photoshop Elements (3.0), I go into Levels
and adjust the mid point far to the right. This simulates the gamma a
little, but it is a different thing.
