Interesting.  I've never seen a black snake that large in the northeast. 
  It's a bit late now but I suspect you could have forced the egg eater 
to disgorge his ceramic egg meal by squeezing him (gently) and forcing 
them back up to his mouth.  I've never tried that and maybe it can't be 
done due to possibly cracking his ribs but it might have been worth a 
try.  If unable to do that I'd have probably killed him because he 
certainly was destined to die a horrible death.
