Yikes, I guess it's hard to assess.  Sounds like QC is a problem. 
Otherwise, I kind of blame the learning curve for some of the grumbling.

I'm trying to think what it would be like to go to a dedicated film
scanner from a flatbed with transparency adapter, instead of the other
way around, which is my experience.  I still would prefer a dedicated
film scanner, though with Vuescan at the controls I have no complaints
about the Epson.
