     I didn't think it was a carpenter ant either as there are no empty beer 
cans lying around.  :{b

     My insect guide books all say that there are multitudes of ant species, 
and only the Audubon guide gives any useful information.  According to them, 
the 1-segmented waist is characteristic of Crater-nest Ants (Conomyrma spp.).  
Not a positive ID but possibly a lead in the right direction.
