[OM] Home Sweet Home, Ad nauseam

On Saturday, I finally got everything out of the old house. There are
still a few random items lurking in a storage unit, but that's it. On
Sunday, I helped somebody get the old entertainment center and a desk
that we weren't moving to the new house. While there, I spotted
something that I almost left behind as it was placed in an unfortunate
spot in the garage.

Many years ago, I got a piece of wood from near the Sleeping Bear
Dunes National Lakeshore. It was from a ghost forest. A ghost forest
is one where the dune had advanced over it burying it for hundreds of
years. Eventually, the dune advances on and what is left behind is
weathered, sand blasted and unique. Where this particular piece of
wood came from, there are actually two generations of trees--this one
being the older. In otherwords, two dunes advanced over it. It may be
many hundreds of years old. Given the specific location of this one
and the movement of the dunes, it may be well over a thousand years
old. This piece of wood has a really neat shape to it. I carried it
for several miles back to the car and have moved it around with me
ever since, but never have had a place to display it.

It now resides on the fireplace mantle where it looks really good.
It's as close to a fine art sculpture as I'll probably ever own. Man,
I would have been bummed if that got left behind.
