Can anyone prove that their defragger makes an actual significant
difference in performance? Aha, I thought not. As long as your drive
has plenty of free space it should never get fragmented in the first
place. Fragmentation was a problem of small FAT16/FAT32 drives and
inefficient space allocation logic of very early DOS versions that
history has passed by. Even an old FAT drive will not get fragmented if
you have lots of space.

If you're concerned just run the Microsoft defragger. If it says you
don't need to defrag just believe it and move on. Save your pennies for
even bigger drives which will always keep you out of fragmentation
worries. Beyond that get a drive with a large, solid state cache (like
64GB)to improve performance. Good ones are almost as fast as a pure SSD.

re: "speedy part of the drive": If a file is not fragmented, ie, all
space is allocated sequentially, there is no "speedy part of the drive"
beyond the first disk seek. After the first (possibly lengthy as
milliseconds go) disk seek the rest are all nothing more than disk
rotational delays and cylinder to cylinder seeking. Nothing to get
excited about since all such files get accessed at the same speed beyond
the first seek.
