When I visited tropical rain forests in Costa Rica, it was an odd mix of the
exotic, which I expected, and the ordinary,
which I did not. Most trees were different in detail, most fauna were
different, but the actual feel of standing in it
was distinctly reminiscent of northern rain forest.
Less true of coastal rain forest, where one gets around in a boat, than
mountain, 'cloud' forest or lower forest on land.
Some things are at the same time familiar and different. Coatamundis are a lot
like their cousin racoons, for example.
Funniest was coming out of forest on the roadless southern coast along the sea
onto a beach, where flora change, only to
see a squirrel, apparently just like those here at home, on a coconut tree
leaning out to the water.

O dear! That does sound awful.
Next week, we are avoiding the double ferry trip from Campbell River, B.C. to
Quadra Island, across Quadra, then to
Cortez Island by taking a water taxi. It's more expensive, but saves an
enormous amount of time. And that's just as foot
passengers - no vehicle lines.
