Sept 17-21 should be peak north of Houghton/Hancock. There are all
those hills and ridge lines that will be quite decent. I might also be
game for car camping too. I can do a sleeping mat and bag in the back
of my Jeep just fine. This gets us in some of the ideal locations for
sunrise. Besides, it does help keep the expenses down. If Moose comes,
we'll let him stay in a Motel and we'll crash his place so we can
charge batteries and get a shower. I do have tents and tons of camping
gear too. (The State Park at Copper Harbor is fantastic, but there are
areas east which can by dry camped for free).

As I think about this, we might consider spending the bulk of our time
up in the Keweenaw peninsula and just do the Ontonagon area coming and
going. There is a LOT of stuff to photograph up there and Karen
reminds me that I already have great pictures of Bond Falls. The north
shore between Eagle River and Copper Harbor, all the way over to
Keweenaw Point is very much like Isle Royale. There are also a few
water falls up there which nobody photographs because of
accessibility.

My last two trips up there were substantially research trips looking
for photo ops for a workshop. I'm quite satisfied with the
possibilities that exist and it's in a pretty compact region with
about an hour drive from one end to another. The diversity in
landscape is exceptional. In the Houghton/Hancock area, there stamping
plants and the steel dam. Calumet is pretty photogenic as it was a
very wealthy mining community. On the east shore, things go from
shoreline to marsh. Going to the Gay Bar is optional. Of course, the
tunnel of trees on the road to Copper Harbor is world famous.

BTW, the theater in Calumet is where the "Cry 'Fire' in a crowded
theater" event happened.

This region is known as "Copper Country". It is the one place on earth
that has had the greatest concentration of pure copper in solid chunk
form. It is unlike copper mining in any other part of the world.
