I grew up witnessing the photographic tensions between my parents. However,
with a twist. My dad was the photographer, but claimed to not have a
creative bone in his body. (sure, Dad, whatever you say). He would take
creative shots without realizing that they were creative shots. But the big
tension was that mom would see something she wanted photographed and in a
specific way. Dad wouldn't see it. They'd go a few rounds. He'd try handing
the camera to her, but she refused to take it. "I don't know how to run
it." "Push this button--that's it!" "No." "Then the photo won't get taken."
After a few references to his parents and childhood, dad would end up
taking the shot and the cycle would continue. Meanwhile, us kids would be
making road-runner dust clouds getting out of there.

My wife and I have times were we are in a similar situation. She sees
something I don't. But I'm pretty clear that it isn't that I don't want to
take the shot, it's just that I don't see the shot. I can't shoot what I
cannot see. She pulls out her pocket camera and gets the shot herself. That
was a brilliant Christmas gift all those years ago.
