Thanks, Chuck.  I tried that, but found I couldn't cope with the stopped 
down focusing as he kept moving around.  I eventually left it open and 
accepted the OOF areas.

And I don't have a 500mm equivalent AF lens!  My budget doesn't allow for 
that.
