I do not understand how the Italian economy could be ailing. Every
restaurant we visited was packed. Italian tourists were everywhere,
spending money like crazy. We poor Americans could not compete with the
Euro and ended up skipping meals and having picnics! (We would have done
that anyway). Italians seemed to be enjoying multiple courses and
expensive wines in all of the restaurants and buying all of the designer
clothes and shoes on display everywhere. Tour groups seemed to pass
through without buying anything but cheap souvenirs made in China. ;-)
We bought only olive oil and wine made on the farm where we stayed in
Tuscany.
