Jan, I usually don't comment on your footnotes, but this one fits in
with some other research I've been involved with at work. Thom's
analysis is absolutely correct, but it isn't the only factor.
Transportation is an equally important factor. With good
transportation, locating the civilization near the power source
(either direct sunlight or stored sunlight (oil, coal, peat, etc)., is
not necessary. If the transportation system falls short for some
reason, the civilization will also fail. In extremely rare
circumstances, has there ever been a successful civilization that
survived long without trade with other civilizations.

I am not free to talk about what my research concerns, but let's just
say that it has to to with the effect communications systems on the
success or failure of entire communities. Fascinating stuff. The
modern communications system is just another form of transportation.
