Yes, red is sometimes very difficult for certain sensors, I believe.

Although many of your photos came out fine with your handholding, I think that 
a tripod is best (with IS off) so that you can use a smaller aperture, slower 
shutter speed and clamp or hold the subject or a background.  However, I often 
take the short cut and hold the camera in my hands.
