Tina, I definitely use it. Yes, the light settings seem to be best for
me. The algorithm has changed a bit through the years and keeps
getting better. For most clean slides, medium works better, but if
you've got a big scratch or some serious grungies on a slide, the IR
cleaning in Vuescan tends to get a bit nasty with its fix. It'll look
like you took the smudge tool in Photoshop and swept across the
scratch. I usually use light cleaning and then do a quite perusal over
the image in the editor to make sure nothing is going to deep-six the
image.

Another issue that we have with SOME scanning software and scanners,
but has been largely addressed in Vuescan is the "pepper grain" in
Provia 100 and Velvia 50 scans. This so called "pepper grain" is
usually caused by refraction in surface anomalies. Fuji attempted to
frost the polyester a tiny bit to make it scan better. It did, but it
also caused other problems. When scanning with, say, a Nikon scanner,
the light for a given pixel/sample ends up getting refracted away from
the CCD. This causes a blacked out pixel or more. What has happened
with some of the IR cleaning scanning systems is that the IR channel
is refracted differently than the RBG channels. The IR cleaning will
usually skip the visible black specks, but will end up trying to clean
perfectly good spots instead. I've puzzled over some mystery blurs
until I figured this one out.

Nice picture, BTW. The coloring and contrast is definitely more
pleasing. The images were taking on a chromed look to them. Chromed as
in shiny metallic look, not Fujichrome or Kodachrome.
