The screen protectors for Palm Pilots were pretty important as the
surface was a relatively soft plastic. The screen on my Minolta A1
should have had a screen protector because the anti-reflective coating
is pretty vulnerable. The screen on the E-1 came with a protective
plastic cover which was of pretty soft plastic and got horribly
scratched up. Without the protector, well, the screen has held up just
fine. The screen on my smartphone, which is the common Gorilla glass
is pretty tough and doesn't scratch easily at all.

So, let's draw a parallel with "protective" UV filters on lenses. Why?
Honestly, I have yet to see ANY screen protector that didn't degrade
the image-quality of the screen image. In the case of the cell-phones,
there is little reason to use a protector to preserve resale value
because the phones have little resale value with or without the
protectors. In the case of digital cameras, I can see some value in
keeping everything scratch free if you are the type who's hobby is
buying and selling cameras.

One variation to this, though. I do like screen protectors that modify
the surface to be less likely to show smudges from nose grease and
fingerprints or reduce the overall reflectance. Other than that, I
tend to just let my screens go commando.
