OK, something (now obvious) finally clicked. I have always understood
that LightRoom didn't move things around, that it is only indexing
what's already there. What didn't make sense was why it was doing this
in the first place if the structure wasn't being altered. What finally
clicked is that it requires it's own *searchable* structure to find
images based on metadata and other searchable keywords. Since I don't
use that sort of searching it doesn't make much sense for my own use but
I'm now not concerned in letting it at least build the catalog (which
won't actually serve any purpose) We'll see how long it takes to resync
itself when I futz with the physical structure outside of LightRoom.
Tina, you should write the library description in these LightRoom books.
