It turns out that you are confusing the tropical Carica papaya (papaya)

with the eastern US Asimina triloba (pawpaw or paw paw).

I knew the name since the city of Paw Paw, Michigan 
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paw_Paw,_Michigan>
is not far from Battle Creek, Michigan where I was born and raised until 
age 15.  But I never realized it was a tree with edible fruit and have 
never seen one that I recall.  While Paw Paw, Michigan was named after 
the tree in 1837 it's at the extreme northern range of the tree.  So I 
suppose that it's not unusual that I was not familiar with it.

I don't like papaya either.  I hope pawpaw tastes better.  Maybe Rick 
can tell use since he's growing them.  :-)
