Yes, pleasant, and a little too bad ... But my holidays were all about family,
and that was the only, and unexpected,
time window I had. Carol's elder nephew lives there, and had talked his
parents, his aunts and their spouses and
children into coming to his house for Christmas. It was the first time the
three sisters had been together for more than
a few hours, let alone a major holiday, in many years, since their mother died.

So it was a very busy, engaging visit, with relaxing time, as well as various
activities together. A great visit!

Apparently, we went to Seattle to avoid the rain at home. Reports are of rains
of Biblical proportions part of the time
we were gone. :-) Sunny with a few fluffy clouds today.

I'd been meaning to post about it, so I'm glad it came up.

I always work in 16 bit, even if not planning to bend tones.

Before any sort of sharpening, I always do NR, in this case, NeatImage.
Otherwise, the sharpening is just going to make
the noise really ugly.

I didn't 'sharpen', in the common sense of using USM, which is what nearly all
sharpening apps, sliders in editors, etc.
are underneath. I used FocusMagic, which is one of 2-3 app/plug-ins that used
deconvolution to restore detail.
Deconvolution is a mathematically different approach that attempts to 'put back
together' what lens flaws have done.

Because I was trying to both reduce noise and sharpen, I made a mask to limit
the 'sharpening' to areas with in focus
detail. So areas like the walls, deep shadows, and the foreground aren't
sharpened at all.

One may then 'paint' the mask for visual adjustment. I didn't need to here, but
it is common to reduce sharpening on
facial skin, while retaining or increasing it for eyes, mouth, etc.

So, the contents of the blue bowl aren't changed, as light colors don't show
noise, but the interior of the bowl is
slightly softer, with less visible noise. The farther part of the green leaf
plate is neither noise reduced nor
sharpened, as the noise doesn't show, but it shouldn't be any sharper. Mostly
the result of selecting shadows, with a
little hand adjustment.

Inquiring minds satisfied?
