Maybe I should look for a similar app for my Google Nexus 7. I used it
along with our Garmin GPS as a driver's GPS using a $10 "CoPilot" app.
Unlike Google, Copilot downloads a full set of US (and optionally
Canadian) maps which require about 2GB. CoPilot makes mincemeat of the
4-5 year old Garmin GPS for time to acquire satellites. However, the
app has some rough edges and omissions in function relative to the
Garmin yet exceeds the Garmin in some areas. The much larger screen of
the Nexus 7 allows exploring your whereabouts on the map which is not
practical on the 3-1/2" Garmin. When looking for POI's like restaurants
or hotels it also displays their locations on the map rather than a
simple distance indication like the Garmin. On the other hand, the
voice guidance of the CoPilot only says things like "take exit in 1
mile" instead of "take exit 17 in one mile". It's generally not a
problem but when one encounters closely spaced turns and exits it can be
a bit confusing.

I just checked CoPilot and it gives no indication of any tracking
capability that I can find... but user instructions is not one of its
strong points.
