I don't know what's wrong on your end.  I just tried it and was getting 
good sync up to and including 1/320... 1/3 stop beyond the 1/250 spec. 
At 1/400 there was some shading near the top of the frame and by 1/500 
about 1/2 of the frame was black on top.  Strangely, there were two 
shots where I thought the flash had misfired but in every frame I 
checked I had a good flash exposure.  I can only assume that I hadn't 
pushed the shutter button fully home.

Are you sure you were shooting in manual mode with a suitable shutter speed?
