A lot of places in northeast Indiana have French names. Although most
white people in Fort Wayne today are Germans, the French were the first
white people to live in Indiana, in the late 1600s, and they had a
tremendous cultural impact. In the 1820s, the chief of the Miami Indians,
the tribe that controlled most of Indiana until 1794, was named
Jean-Baptiste de Richardville. His house is the oldest building in Fort
Wayne.

Besancon is just a crossroads in the eastern part of Allen County, about
10 miles east of Fort Wayne. All that is there is a Catholic church, the
abandoned schoolhouse, and a couple of farmhouses. There used to be a
larger school across the street from the schoolhouse, which closed decades
ago and was finally demolished a few years ago. Besancon is still marked
as a town on maps.
