Well, I came back to the list after working on this image, only to find that

I used NeatImage for NR, and just worked on top of that layer. I'm not sure I

I don't understand all that blend mode stuff. Probably should. But a single
layer whit ShadowHighlight applied pretty
much took care of those issues. I did mask it to maintain the sense of
brightness in the lower center, darkening in both
directions

LOL! Yeah, me too. Several layers later ...

Is that why it looks grittier than the original? I dunno, mine may be too
smooth, but yours is too gritty for me. I know
Tina likes some grain, so I hope I didn't get carried away.
I also had the idea of a commercial image in mind, as I do like the picture of
family life, so I cleaned up the kids
faces. I love the smooth tonalities of these people's faces in B&W, and excess
grain messes that up.
Mostly just NR, ShadowHigh, Curves and detail work on the kids.
