And that's why the typical lighting rig for a scene like that is so
massive. The trick is to lower the contrast which overpowers the sun.
That takes some monster lighting to accomplish it.

The focus shifting may have been intentional. It's been kinda an in
thing to do that kind of focus nonsense. It's supposed to add drama
and meaning to an otherwise weak script.
