I was faced with this dilemma a few years ago. After a while i remembered
that my mother used to belong to a machine-knitting club - in fact she was
so good at it that Singer had her give classes.

Then I reasoned that in such knitting clubs there must be people who do knit
to make money, so what I should do is search in the local directories of
clubs ( our Main Library in Christchurch ( now temporarily defunct due to
earthquake damage - still ) - used to maintain great lists of local clubs of
all
kinds, and their contact people.)

I picked out several clubs and got on the end of the phone.

Within a few days I had found a communicative secretary who knew of just
the person I needed. After a discussion with same, I went to a specialty
wool shop and bought a large spindle of fine white wool, took along my very
religious ( = holey ) original jersey for a pattern, and she set to it.

Two weeks and $60 later I had my high neck (polar-neck) jersey.

Satisfactory in all respects and I still have it.
