The i-phone does have a GSM chip as well even on Verizon versions as a
couple iterations ago they decided to make just one phone (CDMA used in
US by Verizon ) . They will SOAK you for the privilege of activating it
for a temp. international plan (very convenient but expensive). Verizon
seems to be willing to unloack phone for good longstanding customers
(so u can put in a local sim)
(>6mos?) but no guarantee. If you didn't upgrade the OS you can hack
phone and unlock it yourself but it is a bit of a pain.

If you don't always need to call or be reached, Skype is easy to use
in hot spots and you can call landlines
for a small fee---BUY some Skype credit B4 you go. I tested it a while
back and worked just fine in any decent hot spot. I called my own
landline and it cost me 4cents per minute. Ouch ;-) I called several
people (land lines or mobile (not skype to Skype which is alwyas free
of course) from Greece--cost me 4cents per minute.. :-))

I couldn't even burn through 10 bucks of credits though I don't talk
that much. My Sister-in-law has an international plan from her work,
so I could always be reached on her phone so the Skype solution was
fine. You can txt in a hot spot as well. the map function also worked
to see where you were going, as long as you used it in a hot spot first
so it had the maps. (this is with NO voice or data service via GSM) I
don't know any details why that worked but it did and was very nice.
Not sure that helped but anyway, Mike
