Hi Chuck,

I have been pondering a similar question, and I haven't had a chance to see 
what is going on.  First, I think there is a collector missing, since the 
pipes are not exposed like this in most photos.  Secondly, the early DC-3s 
had 9-cylinder Wright engines.  But that doesn't explain why there are 8, 
not 9 pipes.  I will try to take another look, but it could be a couple of 
weeks before I get a chance.
