Mine is a 510, but I suspect the 520 is the same.  Just get in the ballpark 
with the viewfinder, then push the button for Live View, on the rear 
display, and press OK to magnify.

I actually found that I can focus this lens fairly closely just using the 
viewfinder, but I like to use the magnifier if I think the subject will 
remain in a fixed position.  Hard to predict with birds.  I do place a black 
cloth over the camera and my head, in order to see the rear display.

I use the lens on a bellows, so focusing is fairly easy when I figure out 
which knob to turn.  Here is a photo of it on the E-1, but I normally use it 
on the E-510 for Live View, and add a full set of extension tubes to help 
the bellows length.
