I have a 2006 MacBook Pro, the first one with the Core2Duo chipset. A
number of years ago, I replaced the spinny drive with a 7200rpm one, got a
bit of a performance boost.

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a 128GB Crucial SSD for around $115.
Went ahead and swapped it for the 7200rpm drive, cloned the install onto
it, rebooted.

Whoa.... Full boot, from off to me logging in and getting to the desktop:
25 seconds. And this isn't a MacBook Air, it's a relative senior citizen.
I can't go beyond Lion with that chipset, but damn, I think I just bought
myself a couple of years yet. LR opens in seconds...

When prices come down a lot more, I may swap out the spinny drive in my
iMac for a SSD. I know I'm going to do that with the 2008 Mac Mini that I
have connected to the media center in the living room...

I say bring on the SSD'S!!!!
