I finally got my laptop back to running on WinXP today. The CD drive is
wearing out, and I replaced it with the one from the laptop that died back
in November. Once I got that fixed, it took a little over an hour to
install Win98/SE and then upgrade to WinXP.

I had noticed some differences when running it with the Win7 backup hard
drive, and resetting the BIOS to default cleared that up. So this virus it
got three weeks ago didn't just corrupt the WinXP OS, but damaged the BIOS
as well. That's a pretty hefty virus, and as someone said earlier these new
ones can go undetected by antivirus software and firewalls.

When I get all of my software installed, I'm going to clone the hard
drive over the backup so that I can have a seamless transition and repair if
this should ever happen again.
