My semi-educated guess on body #1. It seems to work OK in manual mode
but not auto or P. The difference is that in manual mode a timer was in
control of the exposure. In auto or P the meter is controlling or
failing to control the exposure. But recall that these are TTL bodies.
Is there film in the cameras? Stick a test roll in and see what
happens. Also make sure that exposure compensation is set to none and
that there's a lens on the camera.

After you put the test roll in set the manual mode exposure to the
meter's recommendation. Then try auto whose shutter sound should be
like the manual exposure at the same aperture. I'm not sure what
program mode would sound like without referring to what the camera will
decide to do under specific exposure values.

Also, the behavior is what one would expect with dead batteries. If the
batteries are very low they might revive a bit after being removed and
reinstalled. But the other things (like no film in the body) are more
likely culprits I think.
