     They can be.  That ancient cast aluminum Mobilgrip pistol grip was a great 
find, and it's the best thing to have on hand when stalking insects and 
wildlife.  Almost as steady as a tripod with the 75-260 as the tripod mount is 
very close to the centre of gravity.
