Those are most evocative images.

My most memorable experience of travel in India was a journey from Calcutta to 
Ooticamund in the Nilgiris.  We went by train to Madras, then were driven from 
there to Ooty, an 8-hour journey I remember.  

It was beautiful; I was in a bad mood as I had had to leave a girlfriend in 
Calcutta, but that passed and I enjoyed the mountains; my mother had gone to 
school in Wellington as my grandfather was on the trains in South India for 
several years.
