Interesting postscript to this; I came back to my PC after lunch yesterday
to the ominous sound of an intermittent quiet beeping, then a hard drive
write failure message and finally a BSOD. I switched the PC off and back on
again and got the fateful message NTLDR missing. I was able to boot into
Windows from a previously cloned HDD so I knew that the problem was in the
other hard drive. That failing drive was not visible in Windows so I decided
to try to look at it from Linux. I put a Linux CD in the optical drive and
attached the failing drive in a USB caddy - no other HDD present - switched
on and, instead of Linux booting, Windows came up bright and breezy, booted
from the USB drive which was higher up the boot chain than the CD. I
switched off again, placed the drive back in the PC and switched on. Windows
has been running sweet as a nut ever since.
Did this have anything to do with Capture One and the .net 4 thing? I don't
know but it seems a remarkable coincidence.

The problem Brian and I had was Microsoft highly recommended we stop the
download before it caused damage.........so we did.
