Not quite. At same F-stops, they are pretty much the same--just maybe
the 1.4 has a tiny edge in some scenarios, but the 1.8 hangs right in
there too. "A bit soft" just means that it isn't as brutally sharp as
some.

The 1.2 has a distinctly different look to the images, though. It has
some of that "wrap-around 3D" look that the 35/2, 35-80/2.8, 90/2 and
100/2 have. I think JDubs has pretty much glued his 50/1.2 to an
EOS-5D.

I have a couple of the latest/greatest 50/1.4 lenses, as well as the
50/1.8 lenses. When comparing sharpness and overall functionality, the
1.8 is just as good and essentially indestinguishable. However, how
the lenses handle OOF highlights and bokeh is just different enough to
swing the choice one way or the other. Honestly, if I'm looking for
image honesty, I'll take the honest 50/1.8. Personally, I prefer a bit
of personality in my photographs, so I'll grab the 50/1.4 which has
gobs of personality. I'll stop here.
